In spite of his usual courtesy, Vronsky interrupted her.

`This way; let us go in here. Don't go near the window,' said Anna, trying the paint to see if it were dry. `Alexei, the paint's dry already,' she added.
From the reception room they went into the corridor. Here Vronsky showed them the mechanism for ventilation on a novel system. Then he showed them marble baths, and beds with extraordinary springs. Then he showed them the wards one after another, the storeroom, the linen room, then the heating stove of a new pattern, then the trolleys, which would make no noise as they carried everything needed along the corridors, and many other things. Sviiazhsky, as a connoisseur in the latest mechanical improvements, appreciated everything fully. Dolly simply wondered at all as something she had not seen before, and, anxious to understand it all, made minute inquiries about everything, which gave Vronsky apparent satisfaction.
`Yes, I imagine that this will be the solitary example of a properly fitted hospital in Russia,' said Sviiazhsky.
`And won't you have a lying-in ward?' asked Dolly. `That's so much needed in the country. I have often...'
In spite of his usual courtesy, Vronsky interrupted her.
`This is not a lying-in home, but a hospital for the sick, and is intended for all diseases, except infectious complaints,' he said. `Ah! Look at this,' and he rolled up to Darya Alexandrovna an invalid chair that had just been ordered for convalescents. `Look!' He sat down in the chair and began moving it. `The patient can't walk - still too weak, perhaps, or something wrong with his legs, but he must have air, and he moves, rolls himself along....'
Darya Alexandrovna was interested by everything. She liked everything very much, but most of all she liked Vronsky himself, with his natural, simplehearted enthusiasm. `Yes, he's a very dear, good man,' she thought several times, not hearing what he said, but looking at him and penetrating into his expression, while she mentally put herself in Anna's place. She liked him so much just now with his eager interest that she saw how Anna could be in love with him.

Veslovsky and Tushkevich went off to the bathing place

So it was decided. Veslovsky and Tushkevich went off to the bathing place, promising to get the boat ready and to wait there for them.
They walked along the path in two couples, Anna with Sviiazhsky, and Dolly with Vronsky. Dolly was a little embarrassed and anxious in the new surroundings in which she found herself Abstractly, theoretically, she did not merely justify - she positively approved of Anna's conduct. As is indeed not infrequent with women of unimpeachable virtue, weary of the monotony of virtuous existence, at a distance she not only excused illicit love - she positively envied it. Besides, she loved Anna with all her heart. But seeing Anna in actual life among these strangers, with this fashionable tone that was so new to Darya Alexandrovna, she felt ill at ease. What she disliked particularly was seeing Princess Varvara ready to overlook everything for the sake of the comforts she enjoyed.
As a general principle, abstractly, Dolly approved of Anna's action; but to see the man for whose sake her action had been taken was disagreeable to her. Moreover, she had never liked Vronsky. She thought him very proud, and saw nothing in him of which he could be proud except his wealth. But against her own will, here in his own house, he imposed upon her more than ever, and she could not be at ease with him. She experienced with him the same feeling she had had the maid about her dressing jacket. Just as with the maid she had felt not exactly ashamed, but embarrassed at her darns, so she felt with him not exactly ashamed, but embarrassed at herself.
Dolly was ill at ease, and tried to find a subject of conversation. Even though she supposed that, through his pride, praise of his house and garden would be sure to be disagreeable to him, she did all the same tell him how much she liked his house.
`Yes, it's a very fine building, and in the good old-fashioned style,' he said.
`I like so much the court in front of the steps. Was that always so?'
`Oh, no!' he said, and his face beamed with pleasure. `If you could only have seen the court last spring!'
And he began, at first rather diffidently, but more and more carried away by the subject as he went on, to draw her attention to the various details of the decoration of his house and garden. It was evident that, having devoted a great deal of trouble to improve and beautify his home, Vronsky felt a need to show off the improvements to a new person, and was genuinely delighted at Darya Alexandrovna's praise.

Then there's Tushkevich

`I expected it to be the other way,' said Darya Alexandrovna shyly.
`Oh, no! By the way, do you know I saw Seriozha?' said Anna, screwing up her eyes, as though looking at something far away. `But we'll talk about that later. You wouldn't believe it, I'm like a hungry beggar woman when a full dinner is set before her, and she does not know what to begin on first. The full dinner is you, and the talks I have before me with you, which I could never have with anyone else; and I don't know which subject to begin upon first. Mais je ne vous ferai grace de rien. I must have everything out with you. Oh, I ought to give you a sketch of the company you will meet with us,' she began. `I'll begin with the ladies. Princess Varvara - you know her, and I know your opinion and Stiva's about her. Stiva says the whole aim of her existence is to prove her superiority over Auntie Katerina Pavlovna: that's all true; but she's a good-natured woman, and I am so grateful to her. In Peterburg there was a moment when un chaperon was absolutely essential for me. Then she turned up. But, really, she is good-natured. She did a great deal to alleviate my position. I see you don't understand all the difficulty of my position... there in Peterburg,' she added. `Here I'm perfectly at ease and happy. Well, of that later on, though. Then Sviiazhsky - he's the marshal of the district, and he's a very good sort of a man, but he wants to get something out of Alexei. You understand, with his property, now that we are settled in the country, Alexei can exercise great influence. Then there's Tushkevich - you have seen him, you know - Betsy's admirer. Now he's been thrown over, and he's come to see us. As Alexei says, he's one of those people who are very pleasant if one accepts them for what they try to appear to be, et puis, il est comme il faut, as Princess Varvara says. Then Veslovsky... you know him. A very charming boy,' she said, and a sly smile curved her lips. `What's this wild story about him and the Levins? Veslovsky told Alexei about it, and we don't believe it. Il est tres gentil et na?f,' she said again with the same smile. `Men need occupation, and Alexei needs a circle, so I value all these people. We have to have the house lively and gay, so that Alexei may not long for any novelty. Then you'll see the steward - a German, a very good fellow, and he understands his work. Alexei has a very high opinion of him. Then the doctor, a young man, not quite a Nihilist perhaps, but, you know, he eats with his knife... But a very good doctor. Then the architect... Une petite cour.'

vChapter 19

Left alone, Darya Alexandrovna, with a good housewife's eye, scanned her room. All she had seen in entering the house and walking through it, and all she saw now in her room, gave her an impression of wealth and sumptuousness and of that modern European luxury of which she had only read in English novels, but had never seen in Russia and in the country. Everything was new, from the new French hangings on the walls to the carpet which covered the whole floor. The bed had a spring mattress, and a special sort of bolster and taffeta pillowcases on the small pillows. The marble washstand, the dressing table, the little sofa, the tables, the bronze clock on the chimney piece, the window curtains and the portieres were all new and expensive.

The smart maid, who came in to offer her services, with her hair done up high, and a gown more fashionable that Dolly's, was as new and expensive as the whole room. Darya Alexandrovna liked her neatness, her deferential and obliging manners, but she felt ill at ease with her. She felt ashamed of her seeing the patched dressing jacket that had unluckily been packed by mistake for her. She was ashamed of the very patches and darned places of which she had been so proud at home. At home it had been so clear that for six dressing jackets there would be needed twenty-four arsheenes of nainsook at sixty-five kopecks the yard, which was a matter of fifteen roubles, besides the cutting out and making, and these fifteen roubles had been saved. But before the maid she felt, if not exactly ashamed, at least uncomfortable.
Darya Alexandrovna had a great sense of relief when Annushka, whom she had known for years, walked in. The smart maid was sent for to go to her mistress, and Annushka remained with Darya Alexandrovna.
Annushka was obviously much pleased at that lady's arrival, and began to chatter away without a pause. Dolly observed that she was longing to express her opinion in regard to her mistress's position, especially as to the love and devotion of the Count to Anna Arkadyevna, but Dolly carefully interrupted her whenever she began to speak about this.
`I grew up with Anna Arkadyevna; my lady's dearer to me than anything. Well, it's not for us to judge. And, to be sure, there seems so much love...'
`Kindly order these things washed for me, please,' Darya Alexandrovna cut her short.
`Certainly. We've two women kept specially for washing small things, but most of the linen's done by machinery. The Count goes into everything himself. Ah, what a husband he would make!...'
Dolly was glad when Anna came in, and by her entrance put a stop to Annushka's gossip.
Anna had put on a very simple batiste gown. Dolly scrutinized that simple gown attentively. She knew what it meant, and the price at which such simplicity was obtained.
`An old friend,' said Anna of Annushka.
Anna was not embarrassed now. She was perfectly composed and at ease. Dolly saw that she had now completely recovered from the impression her arrival had made on her, and had assumed that superficial, careless tone which, as it were, closed the door on that compartment in which her deeper feelings and intimate meditations were kept.

And Dolly saw that the tears stood in her eyes.

And Dolly saw that the tears stood in her eyes. She pressed Anna's hand in silence.
`Well, what are these buildings? How many there are of them!' After a moment's silence she repeated her question.
`These are the servant's houses, stud farm, and stables,' answered Anna. `And there the park begins. It had all gone to ruin, but Alexei had everything renewed. He is very fond of this place, and, what I never expected, he has become intensely interested in looking after it. But his is such a rich nature! Whatever he takes up, he does splendidly. So far from being bored by it, he works with passionate interest. He - with his temperament as I know it - he has become careful and businesslike, a first-rate manager, he positively reckons every penny in his management of the land. But only in that. When it's a question of tens of thousands, he doesn't think of money.' She spoke with that gleefully sly smile with which women often talk of the secret characteristics - only known to them - of those they love. `Do you see that big building? That's the new hospital. I believe it will cost over a hundred thousand; that's his dada just now. And do you know how it all came about? The peasants asked him for some meadowland, I think it was, at a cheaper rate, and he refused, and I accused him of being miserly. Of course it was not really because of that, but because of everything together - he began this hospital to prove, do you see, that he was not miserly about money. C'est une petitesse, if you like, but I love him all the more for it. And now you'll see the house in a moment. It was his grandfather's house, and he has had nothing changed outside.'
`How beautiful!' said Dolly, looking with involuntary admiration at the handsome house with columns, standing out among the different-colored greens of the old trees in the garden.
`Isn't it fine? And from the house, from the top, the view is wonderful.'
They drove into a courtyard strewn with gravel and bright with flowers, in which two laborers were at work putting an edging of stones round the light mold of a flower bed, and drew up in a covered entry.

Chapter 18

When both the women were seated in the carriage, a sudden embarrassment came over both of them. Anna was disconcerted by the intent look of inquiry Dolly fixed upon her. Dolly was embarrassed because after Sviiazhsky's phrase about `this vehicle,' she could not help feeling ashamed of the dirty old carriage in which Anna was sitting with her. The coachman Philip and the countinghouse clerk were experiencing the same sensation. The countinghouse clerk, to conceal his confusion, busied himself settling the ladies, but Philip the coachman became sullen, and was bracing himself not to be overawed in future by this external superiority. He smiled ironically, looking at the raven horse, and was already deciding in his own mind that this smart trotter in the charabanc was only good for promenade, and wouldn't do forty verstas straight off in the heat.
The peasants had all got up from the telega and were inquisitively and mirthfully staring at the meeting of the friends, making their comments on it.
`They're pleased, too; haven't seen each other for a long while,' said the curly-headed old man with the bast round his hair.
`I say, Uncle Gherasim, if we could take that raven horse now, to cart the corn, that 'ud be quick work!'
`Look-ee! Is that a woman in breeches?' said one of them, pointing to Vassenka Veslovsky sitting in a sidesaddle.
`Nay, a man! See how smartly he's going it!'
`Eh, lads! Seems we're not going to sleep, then?'
`What chance of sleep today!' said the old man, with a sidelong look at the sun. `Midday's past, look-ee! Get your hooks, and come along!'

Anna looked at Dolly's thin, careworn face, with its wrinkles filled with dust from the road, and she was on the point of saying what she was thinking - that is, that Dolly had grown thinner. But, conscious that she herself had grown handsomer, and that Dolly's eyes were telling her so, she sighed and began to speak about herself.
`You are looking at me,' she said, `and wondering how I can be happy in my position? Well! It's shameful to confess, but I... I'm inexcusably happy. Something magical has happened to me, like a dream, when you're frightened, panic-stricken, and all of a sudden you wake up and all the horrors are no more. I have waked up. I have lived through the misery, the dread, and now for a long while past, especially since we've been here, I've been so happy!...' she said, with a timid smile of inquiry looking at Dolly.

Chapter 29

`Now, it's all over - God be praised!' was the first thought that came to Anna Arkadyevna, when she had said good-by for the last time to her brother, who had stood blocking up the entrance to the carriage till the third bell rang. She sat down on her lounge beside Annushka, and looked about her in the twilight of the sleeping carriage. `Thank God! tomorrow I shall see Seriozha and Alexei Alexandrovich, and my life, good and familiar, will go on in the old way.'
Still in the same anxious frame of mind in which she had been all that day, Anna took a meticulous pleasure in making herself comfortable for the journey. With her tiny, deft hands she opened and shut her little red bag, took out a cushion, laid it on her knees, and, carefully wrapping up her feet, settled herself comfortably. An invalid lady had already lain down to sleep. Two other ladies began talking to Anna, and a stout elderly lady tucked up her feet, and made observations about the heating of the train. Anna answered the ladies in a few words, but not foreseeing any entertainment from the conversation, she asked Annushka to get a small lantern, hooked it on the arm of her seat, and took from her bag a paper knife and an English novel. At first she could not get interested in her reading. The fuss and stir were disturbing; then, when the train had started, she could not help listening to the noises; then the snow beating on the left window and sticking to the pane, and the sight of the muffled guard passing by, covered with snow on one side, and the conversations about the terrible blizzard raging outside, distracted her attention. And after that everything was the same and the same: the same jouncing and rattling, the same snow lashing the window, the same rapid transitions from steaming heat to cold, and back again to heat, the same flitting of the same faces in the half-murk, and the same voices; and then Anna began to read, and to grasp what she read. Annushka was already dozing, the red bag on her lap, clutched by her broad hands, in gloves, of which one was torn. Anna Arkadyevna read and grasped the sense, yet it was annoying to her to read - that is, to follow the reflection of other people's lives. She had too great a desire to live herself. If she read that the heroine of the novel were nursing a sick man, she longed to move with noiseless steps about his sickroom; if she read of a member of Parliament delivering a speech, she longed to deliver it; if she read of how Lady Mary had ridden after the hounds, and had provoked her sister-in-law, and had surprised everyone by her daring - she, too, longed to be doing the same. But there was no chance of doing anything; and, her little hands toying with the smooth paper knife, she forced herself to read.

Anna's emotionalism infected Dolly

`But I should be in despair if there were anything serious in it on his side,' Anna interrupted her. `And I'm certain it will all be forgotten, and Kitty will leave off hating me.'
`All the same, Anna, to tell you the truth, I'm not very anxious for this marriage for Kitty. And it's better it should come to nothing, if he, Vronsky, is capable of falling in love with you in a single day.'
`Oh, heavens, that would be too silly!' said Anna, and again a deep flush of pleasure appeared on her face, as she heard the idea that absorbed her put into words. `And so here I am, going away, having made an enemy of Kitty, whom I liked so much! Ah, how sweet she is! But you'll make it right, Dolly? Eh?'
Dolly could scarcely suppress a smile. She loved Anna, but she was pleased to see that she, too, had her weaknesses.
`An enemy? That can't be.'
`I did so want you all to care for me, as I do for you, and now I care for you more than ever,' said Anna, with tears in her eyes. `Ah, how silly I am today!'
She passed her handkerchief over her face and began dressing.
At the very moment of starting Stepan Arkadyevich arrived, late, rosy and good-humored, smelling of wine and cigars.
Anna's emotionalism infected Dolly, and when she embraced her sister-in-law for the last time, she whispered:
`Remember, Anna, what you've done for me - I shall never forget. And remember that I love you, and shall always love you as my dearest friend!'
`I don't know why,' said Anna, kissing her and hiding her tears.
`You understand me, and still understand. Good-by, my darling!'

I know that you all love her really too well to be unjust or unkind;

I know that you all love her really too well to be unjust or unkind; but excuse me, Mr. Knightley, if I take the liberty (I consider myself, you know, as having somewhat of the privilege of speech that Emma's mother might have had) the liberty of hinting that I do not think any possible good can arise from Harriet Smith's intimacy being made a matter of much discussion among you. Pray excuse me; but supposing any little inconvenience may be apprehended from the intimacy, it cannot be expected that Emma, accountable to nobody but her father, who perfectly approves the acquaintance, should put an end to it, so long as it is a source of pleasure to herself. It has been so many years my province to give advice, that you cannot be surprized, Mr. Knightley, at this little remains of office.'
`Not at all,' cried he; `I am much obliged to you for it. It is very good advice, and it shall have a better fate than your advice has often found; for it shall be attended to.'
`Mrs. John Knightley is easily alarmed, and might be made unhappy about her sister.'
`Be satisfied,' said he, `I will not raise any outcry. I will keep my ill-humour to myself. I have a very sincere interest in Emma. Isabella does not seem more my sister; has never excited a greater interest; perhaps hardly so great. There is an anxiety, a curiosity in what one feels for Emma. I wonder what will become of her!'
`So do I,' said Mrs. Weston gently, `very much.'
`She always declares she will never marry, which, of course, means just nothing at all. But I have no idea that she has yet ever seen a man she cared for. It would not be a bad thing for her to be very much in love with a proper object. I should like to see Emma in love, and in some doubt of a return; it would do her good. But there is nobody hereabouts to attach her; and she goes so seldom from home.'
`There does, indeed, seem as little to tempt her to break her resolution at present,' said Mrs. Weston, `as can well be; and while she is so happy at Hartfield, I cannot wish her to be forming any attachment which would be creating such difficulties on poor Mr. Woodhouse's account. I do not recommend matrimony at present to Emma, though I mean no slight to the state, I assure you.'
Part of her meaning was to conceal some favourite thoughts of her own and Mr. Weston's on the subject, as much as possible. There were wishes at Randalls respecting Emma's destiny, but it was not desirable to have them suspected; and the quiet transition which Mr. Knightley soon afterwards made to `What does Weston think of the weather; shall we have rain?' convinced her that he had nothing more to say or surmise about Hartfield.
CHAPTER VI
Emma could not feel a doubt of having given Harriet's fancy a proper direction and raised the gratitude of her young vanity to a very good purpose, for she found her decidedly more sensible than before of Mr. Elton's being a remarkably handsome man, with most agreeable manners; and as she had no hesitation in following up the assurance of his admiration by agreeable hints, she was soon pretty confident of creating as much liking on Harriet's side, as there could be any occasion for. She was quite convinced of Mr. Elton's being in the fairest way of falling in love, if not in love already. She had no scruple with regard to him. He talked of Harriet, and praised her so warmly, that she could not suppose any thing wanting which a little time would not add. His perception of the striking improvement of Harriet's manner, since her introduction at Hartfield, was not one of the least agreeable proofs of his growing attachment.
`You have given Miss Smith all that she required,' said he; `you have made her graceful and easy. She was a beautiful creature when she came to you, but, in my opinion, the attractions you have added are infinitely superior to what she received from nature.'
`I am glad you think I have been useful to her; but Harriet only wanted drawing out, and receiving a few, very few hints. She had all the natural grace of sweetness of temper and artlessness in herself. I have done very little.'
`If it were admissible to contradict a lady,' said the gallant Mr. Elton -

And all the children out of the lane-

And she delivered her papers, and took Puggie upon her arm. And

this is the first part of the story which might have been left out.

PUGGIE DIED!! That's the second part.

It was about a week afterwards we arrived in the town, and put

up at the inn. Our windows looked into the tan-yard, which was divided

into two parts by a partition of planks; in one half were many skins

and hides, raw and tanned. Here was all the apparatus necessary to

carry on a tannery, and it belonged to the widow. Puggie had died in

the morning, and was to be buried in this part of the yard; the

grandchildren of the widow (that is, of the tanner's widow, for Puggie

had never been married) filled up the grave, and it was a beautiful

grave- it must have been quite pleasant to lie there.

The grave was bordered with pieces of flower-pots and strewn

over with sand; quite at the top they had stuck up half a beer bottle,

with the neck upwards, and that was not at all allegorical.

The children danced round the grave, and the eldest of the boys

among them, a practical youngster of seven years, made the proposition

that there should be an exhibition of Puggie's burial-place for all

who lived in the lane; the price of admission was to be a trouser

button, for every boy would be sure to have one, and each might also

give one for a little girl. This proposal was adopted by acclamation.

And all the children out of the lane- yes, even out of the

little lane at the back- flocked to the place, and each gave a button.

Many were noticed to go about on that afternoon with only one

suspender; but then they had seen Puggie's grave, and the sight was

worth much more.

With this inspiriting notion, her questions increased in number and meaning;

With this inspiriting notion, her questions increased in number and meaning; and she particularly led Harriet to talk more of Mr. Martin, and there was evidently no dislike to it. Harriet was very ready to speak of the share he had had in their moonlight walks and merry evening games; and dwelt a good deal upon his being so very good-humoured and obliging. He had gone three miles round one day in order to bring her some walnuts, because she had said how fond she was of them, and in every thing else he was so very obliging. He had his shepherd's son into the parlour one night on purpose to sing to her. She was very fond of singing. He could sing a little himself. She believed he was very clever, and understood every thing. He had a very fine flock, and, while she was with them, he had been bid more for his wool than any body in the country. She believed every body spoke well of him. His mother and sisters were very fond of him. Mrs. Martin had told her one day (and there was a blush as she said it,) that it was impossible for any body to be a better son, and therefore she was sure, whenever he married, he would make a good husband. Not that she wanted him to marry. She was in no hurry at all.
`Well done, Mrs. Martin!' thought Emma. `You know what you are about.'
`And when she had come away, Mrs. Martin was so very kind as to send Mrs. Goddard a beautiful goose - the finest goose Mrs. Goddard had ever seen. Mrs. Goddard had dressed it on a Sunday, and asked all the three teachers, Miss Nash, and Miss Prince, and Miss Richardson, to sup with her.'
`Mr. Martin, I suppose, is not a man of information beyond the line of his own business? He does not read?'
`Oh yes! - that is, no - I do not know - but I believe he has read a good deal - but not what you would think any thing of. He reads the Agricultural Reports, and some other books that lay in one of the window seats - but he reads all them to himself. But sometimes of an evening, before we went to cards, he would read something aloud out of the Elegant Extracts, very entertaining. And I know he has read the Vicar of Wakefield. He never read the Romance of the Forest, nor The Children of the Abbey. He had never heard of such books before I mentioned them, but he is determined to get them now as soon as ever he can.'
The next question was -
`What sort of looking man is Mr. Martin?'
`Oh! not handsome - not at all handsome. I thought him very plain at first, but I do not think him so plain now. One does not, you know, after a time. But did you never see him? He is in Highbury every now and then, and he is sure to ride through every week in his way to Kingston. He has passed you very often.'
`That may be, and I may have seen him fifty times, but without having any idea of his name. A young farmer, whether on horseback or on foot, is the very last sort of person to raise my curiosity. The yeomanry are precisely the order of people with whom I feel I can have nothing to do. A degree or two lower, and a creditable appearance might interest me; I might hope to be useful to their families in some way or other. But a farmer can need none of my help, and is, therefore, in one sense, as much above my notice as in every other he is below it.'
`To be sure. Oh yes! It is not likely you should ever have observed him; but he knows you very well indeed - I mean by sight.'
`I have no doubt of his being a very respectable young man. I know, indeed, that he is so, and, as such, wish him well. What do you imagine his age to be?'
`He was four-and-twenty the 8th of last June, and my birthday is the 23rd just a fortnight and a day's difference - which is very odd.'
`Only four-and-twenty. That is too young to settle. His mother is perfectly right not to be in a hurry. They seem very comfortable as they are, and if she were to take any pains to marry him, she would probably repent it. Six years hence, if he could meet with a good sort of young woman in the same rank as his own, with a little money, it might be very desirable.'
`Six years hence! Dear Miss Woodhouse, he would be thirty years old!'
`Well, and that is as early as most men can afford to marry, who are not born to an independence. Mr. Martin, I imagine, has his fortune entirely to make - cannot be at all beforehand with the world. Whatever money he might come into when his father died, whatever his share of the family property, it is, I dare say, all afloat, all employed in his stock, and so forth; and though, with diligence and good luck, he may be rich in time, it is next to impossible that he should have realised any thing yet.'
`To be sure, so it is. But they live very comfortably. They have no indoors man, else they do not want for any thing; and Mrs. Martin talks of taking a boy another year.'

THIS story really consists of two parts. The first part might be

left out, but it gives us a few particulars, and these are useful

We were staying in the country at a gentleman's seat, where it

happened that the master was absent for a few days. In the meantime,

there arrived from the next town a lady; she had a pug dog with her,

and came, she said, to dispose of shares in her tan-yard. She had

her papers with her, and we advised her to put them in an envelope,

and to write thereon the address of the proprietor of the estate,

"General War-Commissary Knight," &c.

She listened to us attentively, seized the pen, paused, and begged

us to repeat the direction slowly. We complied, and she wrote; but

in the midst of the "General War-" she struck fast, sighed deeply, and

said, "I am only a woman!" Her Puggie had seated itself on the

ground while she wrote, and growled; for the dog had come with her for

amusement and for the sake of its health; and then the bare floor

ought not to be offered to a visitor. His outward appearance was

characterized by a snub nose and a very fat back.

"He doesn't bite," said the lady; "he has no teeth. He is like one

of the family, faithful and grumpy; but the latter is my

grandchildren's fault, for they have teased him; they play at wedding,

and want to give him the part of the bridesmaid, and that's too much

for him, poor old fellow."

Mr. Elton was the very person fixed on by Emma for driving the young farmer out of Harriet's head.

Mr. Elton was the very person fixed on by Emma for driving the young farmer out of Harriet's head. She thought it would be an excellent match; and only too palpably desirable, natural, and probable, for her to have much merit in planning it. She feared it was what every body else must think of and predict. It was not likely, however, that any body should have equalled her in the date of the plan, as it had entered her brain during the very first evening of Harriet's coming to Hartfield. The longer she considered it, the greater was her sense of its expediency. Mr. Elton's situation was most suitable, quite the gentleman himself, and without low connexions; at the same time, not of any family that could fairly object to the doubtful birth of Harriet. He had a comfortable home for her, and Emma imagined a very sufficient income; for though the vicarage of Highbury was not large, he was known to have some independent property; and she thought very highly of him as a good-humoured, well-meaning, respectable young man, without any deficiency of useful understanding or knowledge of the world.
She had already satisfied herself that he thought Harriet a beautiful girl, which she trusted, with such frequent meetings at Hartfield, was foundation enough on his side; and on Harriet's there could be little doubt that the idea of being preferred by him would have all the usual weight and efficacy. And he was really a very pleasing young man, a young man whom any woman not fastidious might like. He was reckoned very handsome; his person much admired in general, though not by her, there being a want of elegance of feature which she could not dispense with: - but the girl who could be gratified by a Robert Martin's riding about the country to get walnuts for her might very well be conquered by Mr. Elton's admiration.
CHAPTER V
`
`Oh! you would rather talk of her person than her mind, would you? Very well; I shall not attempt to deny Emma's being pretty.'
`Pretty! say beautiful rather. Can you imagine any thing nearer perfect beauty than Emma altogether - face and figure?'
`I do not know what I could imagine, but I confess that I have seldom seen a face or figure more pleasing to me than hers. But I am a partial old friend.'
`Such an eye! - the true hazle eye - and so brilliant! regular features, open countenance, with a complexion! oh! what a bloom of full health, and such a pretty height and size; such a firm and upright figure! There is health, not merely in her bloom, but in her air, her head, her glance. One hears sometimes of a child being ``the picture of health;'' now, Emma always gives me the idea of being the complete picture of grown-up health. She is loveliness itself. Mr. Knightley, is not she?'
`I have not a fault to find with her person,' he replied. `I think her all you describe. I love to look at her; and I will add this praise, that I do not think her personally vain. Considering how very handsome she is, she appears to be little occupied with it; her vanity lies another way. Mrs. Weston, I am not to be talked out of my dislike of Harriet Smith, or my dread of its doing them both harm.'
`And I, Mr. Knightley, am equally stout in my confidence of its not doing them any harm. With all dear Emma's little faults, she is an excellent creature. Where shall we see a better daughter, or a kinder sister, or a truer friend? No, no; she has qualities which may be trusted; she will never lead any one really wrong; she will make no lasting blunder; where Emma errs once, she is in the right a hundred times.'
`Very well; I will not plague you any more. Emma shall be an angel, and I will keep my spleen to myself till Christmas brings John and Isabella. John loves Emma with a reasonable and therefore not a blind affection, and Isabella always thinks as he does; except when he is not quite frightened enough about the children. I am sure of having their opinions with me.'

Here rests a happy man

Here rests a happy man, that is to say, a man of high birth and

position, which was very lucky for him, otherwise he would have been

scarcely worth notice. It is beautiful to observe how wisely nature

orders these things. He walked about in a coat embroidered all over,

and in the drawing-rooms of society looked just like one of those rich

pearl-embroidered bell-pulls, which are only made for show; and behind

them always hangs a good thick cord for use. This man also had a

stout, useful substitute behind him, who did duty for him, and

performed all his dirty work. And there are still, even now, these

serviceable cords behind other embroidered bell-ropes. It is all so

wisely arranged, that a man may well be in a good humor.

Want To Make Money With Stocks- Here's How You Can Make Great Money With Penny Stocks_48459

One of my favorite investment types are penny stocks. Since some people view these stocks to be a little risky, I see a lot of people avoid them altogether Don't be nervous of these shares though - you will make incredible money if you know how to analyze these shares.

Any share under $2 is what I see as a penny stock. When I choose a stock to invest in, I search for a company that is new and growing. You will see numerous businesses that are now trading under $2 because they have had certain difficulties. Instead of investing in these businesses, I search for newer businesses that are growing. By focusing on these companies I can set myself for huge profits later on when they start doing well..

We should now take a look at how you can seek out money making penny stocks. Once you recognize what to look for, you can start earning exceptional money.

Studying the industry that the company is involved with is an important first stage. Is the competition too tough for a new entrant? You must look over the industry in general to ensure that the organization is producing a product or service that is going to have enough clients.

Second, how about the business itself? Are you pleased with the management? You also want to analyze what the company offers and analyze if their product or service is different from what other companies are providing. Make an effort to find businesses that either produce a unique product or compete on some other aspect such as their prices. It's a good idea to find a organization that produces an original product and stands out from the rest in some means.

Have a look at the financials of the business to see if anything stands out to you, however do not automatically worry if the business isn't generating positive income when you do. Quite often this is the situation with growing companies. Nevertheless I want to determine that the company has access to funds or laons so that the company can continue to push forward.

Also, look for a company that has strong communications with stock owners. I love being able to visit a company website where the business prints periodic updates because this lets me have a manner to stay abreast on company news.

When you start researching penny stocks and buying some stocks, you can find yourself making some huge gains. There's terrific money to be earned when you know what to look for.

Various Home Loan Alternatives For The Big Canadian Mortgage Rates_43314

A very good place to get transfer and have a dream house is Canada. In Canada you have fantastic weather, great environment, panoramic views, and a great mix of unspoiled tourist destination and modernization. Who would not want to have a home in a place which offers a mix of such great things mentioned above? In addition to, the above mentioned reasons, lots of people from all over the globe are shifting to Canada due to its flexibility in home loans structure which is great news for many people who want to own a house or a property. Currently, many banks and financial institutions in Canada offer minimum 4 varieties of home loans which can fit within the financial constraints and the payment preferences of anyone who is willing to take up a mortgage in Canada. These structures are developed by various banks and institutions believing that the need and motives for owing a house or a property is different for different types of people. And of course each category of home loan offers different types of Canadian mortgage interest rate.

The premier typical offer in majority of the Canadian mortgage companies is Closed Variable Interest with a closed duration of 5-years. In this kind of Canadian Mortgage Rate, the rate of interest is reset every month, i.e. on the very first day of each month. This resetting of interest rate after every fixed interval is useful if the interest rates are trending downwards; however, people should not go for this sort of loan if the interest rates in the market are going up. There are various payments alternatives that are available based on financial conditions of the borrower. A person many pay weekly, alternate weeks, monthly or every alternate month. The availability of finance can either be conventional or high-ratio .The initial payment can be very low equivalent to 5% of the loan amount. Canadian Mortgage rates ranges from 5.50-5.75% for such type of loans. Another type of five-year mortgage loan is Fixed Mortgage Rate loan. But, Canadian Mortgage Rates ranges from 6-6.38% for such loans. Opposite to loans where interest rate is reset every month this loan is not advisable if the interest rates are trending downwards; however, one can go for such loan if the interest rates are moving upwards. Five-year mortgage loan, be it fixed or closed, is applicable only to properties classified as residential.

Sever-year mortgage loans are also available in Canada. Whats great of this kind of loan is that it gives a rebate of 7% on the total mortgage amount. The loan tenure can also be expanded up to 10 years. Repayment options for such mortgage are also flexible in nature. In addition, in Canadian mortgage rates interest is not subject to change. Presently, 7.65% is the rate for such type of loan. The 7% cash back can result in more savings; these savings can be used for purchasing new furniture in your new dream house acquired recently through loan. But, there is a catch this loan applies only to people who are looking for a home loan for residential purposes. There is also one cap on the loan value of C$35,000. If the loan value exceeds this cap, the borrower is not eligible for the 7% rebate.

Understanding Your Mortgage Broker Helping You To Find The Best Home Loans Package_41699

Home Loans are most of the time simple to get if you are able to reimburse home loans without problems, but if you have special conditions then it may be to some extent more intricate. Some buyers might be interested in deferred home loans repayments, whereas others may not.

As an example let us look at people who are purchasing for the first time. They are going to possibly have a relatively low income that is apt to multiply over the years, and will usually not have set aside enough for a large deposit. They will hence be looking for a deal that will permit them to pay least at the start and more towards the end of the duration of the loan. This can be predominantly applicable of young professional couples, where an interest only pact would suit them better.

However someone who is purchasing a property to let it out or for speculation, will be looking a different type of mortgage finance on the whole, having a shorter term and lesser interest rates.

For these reasons first time buyers home loans mortgage will contain unique conditions that are not on the platter for others. An example of right here is First Home Owners Grant of $7,000 ?which was made larger for a brief time in order to to boost home purchase during the recession, and is set at $21,000 till 31st October 2009, then $10,500 before the end of year when it goes back towards customary $7,000.

You have to apply in the state or territory your new home is in, and you have to commence occupying within a year of purchasing it. You must also never have owned a home earlier. You must also be at least 18 and an Australian permanent resident.

You may also get an unique contract with the interest rate if you are acquiring your first home, and might be approved a higher than normal mortgage, but not 100%. In reality, there are so many alternatives before first time home buyers that you are formidably advised to use the facilities of a home loans broker to supervise your mortgage finance for you.

A broker can uncover the most satisfactory deal for you from numerous of home loans institutions, which an individual lender cannot do. Maybe you should have a higher percentage loan for the worth of your home since only a small deposit is what you can afford, or you may be more keen on getting a lower interest rate. A deferred payment plan may be your option, through which you pay nothing for three months, permitting you spend your spare cash on decorating and furnishing your house. A home loan broker has entry to a variety of lenders and can look after these requirements for you.

Perchance you want to buy to let. A lot of people do, and they are are indifferent to anything but the best interest agreement because they have no attraction towards long term mortgage contracts or most of the other deals on offer. If truth be told, their needs are completely opposite to those of first home buyers. This is also true of business properties, where the best finance deal will never have delayed or home loans interest only repayments, and might even need a low doc mortgage because they are self-employed.

Like the majority of us, young professionals also have very little money when they first marry, but the fact that their joint salaries are liable to keep increasing is their greatest gain. Young professional couples also are likely to have children much later, in order that they have a very comparatively high income in contrast to most others.

If you fit that group, then an interest-only home loan might be more fitting, where you pay just the interest and bank quietly so that you are able to repay the principal when it becomes due at the completion of the mortgage term. This is possible that by means of an investment account or endowment insurance, as an example, though the latter has had some bad reports lately because of lower than expected profits.

However, these are mortgage finance choices that your home loans mortgage broker can assist you with much more than a mortgage lender. Mortgage brokers are extremely effective, more so if you are not knowledgeable about how to deal with lenders and speaking to bank managers. Your broker can procure for you a much better mortgage agreement than you could achieve yourself, and he is is by far the chosen way of negotiating the home loans package that you should buy the ideal house.

Understanding Credit Card Fine Print_50918

While credit card fine print is notoriously dense and difficult to read, it is legally binding, and it is important that you read and understand this fine print before you accept a credit card which may have extremely onerous terms.

The first part of the credit card offer you should read is known as a Schumer box. This is a table with easily read and understood information about rates, fees and penalties. This box includes annual fee, annual percentage rate (APR) for purchases, APR for other purposes, such as balance transfer and cash advances, grace period for purchases, finance calculation method, and transaction fees. All credit cards must provide a Schumer box, all following the same format.

There are several other things you should watch for in fine print. One of the most onerous is that if you are reported as delinquent on any other account, with any creditor, this creditor can raise your APR, in what as known as "universal default."

You should also note whether "disputes on the account are subject to binding arbitration," which would mean that you have no legal recourse against the card issuer, who selects and pays the arbitrator.

Other onerous clauses include lumping balance transfer fees in with purchases, and charging interest on them as if they were purchases, and splitting APR between purchases and cash advances and applying your payments only to the transactions with lower interest rates, thus charging you more over time.

You should also beware "fixed rate" credit cards on which the APR rises automatically on your entire balance if you go over the limit.

Double-billing cycles, or two-billing cycles, are another common way card issuers overcharge cardholders; this practice means that the interest is calculated on the balance over the two prior months, instead of your average daily balance over the previous one month.

Understanding the fine print, and the fees, on your credit card can save you not only a lot of grief, but a considerable amount of money, as well.

Card issuers use the fine print of their card agreements very well, in their own interest. They spell out conditions that most people would not agree to if they were aware of them; the issuers count on people not reading these agreements. The fact is, however, if you agree to them by accepting and using the card, you are bound by the agreements, whether you read them or not.

The most important thing to understand, of course, is that card issuers are in business to make a profit, and it is the cardholder's responsibility to thoroughly investigate all offers.

Treasuries- The Next Bubble-_51576

We've survived the tech bubble and the housing bubble, but are we headed for something more catastrophic than either of those? Some experts are beginning to fear the worst.

Let's review recent financial events. The meltdown in the global financial markets created a wave of panic and a surge of money has poured into what has always been considered safe short-term U.S. Treasury securities. This basically means that investors are willing to put faith in and lend money to the government. Primarily because, even though our national debt stands at staggering $10.59 trillion, and is still growing, the U.S. has never failed to meet a debt payment. This sudden appetite for Treasuries has driven yields down to their lowest levels since the Great Depression.

Over the past couple of months, the Feds have funneled massive amounts into bailout packages upsetting the government's balance sheet. When you add a soaring U.S. deficit into the mix, you get a situation that's causing sleepless nights for anyone that's paying attention.

How Low Can They Go?

We've been waiting to see just how low interest rates on Treasury securities could go before the rapid stream of investments would dry up. It now appears that even zero is not too low. One day during the second week of December, the annualized yield on three-month T-bills in the secondary market hit the minus zero level, down to negative 0.01%, then later that same day it rose to positive 0.01%.

This means that investors are so fearful of the markets, but still have enough faith that the U.S. government, they are willing to risk getting less money upon maturity than they originally invested, and earn no interest along the way.

The Treasury hasn't had to auction new T-bills at a negative rate yet, but on December 8, they actually sold $30 billion in four-week T-bills at a yield of exactly zero. Anyone who bought those can sell them in four weeks, but not for one penny more than they paid for them. At that rate, you could have just as easily stuffed a fistful of $100 bills into a coffee can and buried it in the back yard.

You might be wondering who would be willing to buy Treasury debt for little or no return? It turns out that there were plenty lined up to buy some who probably no longer have back yards so many in fact that the Feds reportedly could have sold up to four times as much as they did. Actually, while there are plenty of individual investors, it's the big institutional investors like pension funds, and international central banks that are the biggest players in the market for Treasury securities.

How Long Can it Last?

There is so much money shifting into Treasuries, it can't last forever. Investors seem to be pouring money into government securities with the same fervor that they did during the housing surge and the dotcom mania. U.S. government debt has always been considered the safest investment in the world. But now some fear the Treasury market is venturing into bubble territory.

The big question becomes, "How long can it last?" Were a bubble of this size to implode, there wouldn't be enough sand bags in the world to stop the flood of money that would come gushing out. When the torrent was over, there would be so little left in the Treasury coffers, the government would be forced to pay higher rates on their burgeoning debt.

Our Foreign Debt Holders If such a day of reckoning is coming, it would be a devastating blow to the economy, and the dollar. At the first sign of the stock market entering a sustained period of recovery, investors would shy away from low-yield Treasuries. The Fed could then be forced to monetize Treasury securities, or else boost the rates higher.

But China and other foreign countries hold a major chunk of U.S. debt. In fact, about half of the nation's $5.3 trillion in publicly traded debt is held by countries like Japan and China. That means a significant down shift in Treasury prices would lead to the decline of the US dollar, a threat of hyper-inflation and finally, a depression.

And yet, even though the U.S. has the dubious distinction of having kicked off the firestorm of global economic meltdown, our government bonds are still considered the safest investments in the world.

What's in Store?

Just like we all thought that the price of homes could only go up, we now know that it's that kind of irrational exuberance that blind us what's coming. Jim Grant of Grant's Interest Rate Observer recently commented on CNBC, "There's more risk in things people think are inherently safe, including cash and Treasuries, vs. the things people perceive as risky."

It appears that even though Treasury yields are at an all time low, even institutional investors are more concerned about preserving capital than they are in getting higher returns. Treasury interest rates are already at or near zero.

If things get worse, and they slip further into negative return territory, would investors actually be willing to pay the government to hold their money for safe keeping? So far, there is no indication that things will get that dire. Although, since none of the rules we've lived by these past few decades seem to apply anymore, we can't speculate on the future.

We think that Treasury interest rates will probably remain low until some time mid-2009, or at least until the recession begins to lighten up. If the skittish market keeps the fear factor alive, people will keep moving money into the Treasury for safekeeping, low interest rates or not.

Three Types Of Loans_49373

A Loan is a kind of debt. A borrower receives an amount as loan from the lender on certain terms and conditions. The terms include the repayment period, instalments, rate of interest and so on. The borrower legally promises to pay the lender the loan amount along with the interest within the stipulated time agreed by both the borrower and the lender. The loans are sometime offered as cash and sometimes the lenders simply extends credit. For instance the banks issue credit cards to the borrowers.

When banks issue credit cards to their borrowers, they don t provide cash. The banks offer them a credit limit depending on the repayment capacity of the individual. Nevertheless the borrowers can utilize the funds up to their credit limit. Similarly working capital limits are offered to industrial and business organization to meet their working capital requirements.

There are basically three types of loans issued to the borrowers. First one is secured loans, the second being unsecured loans and the third one is demand loans. Secured loans are offered against collateral securities. They issue loans against pledging some movable or immovable assets. The interest rate is less for the secured loans.

Mortgage and housing loans are the examples of secured loans. These loans are called secured loans because the banks can take possession of the properties pledged if the borrower does not repay the loan. At the same time banks and financial intuitions are offering unsecured loans too to their valuable customers. The interest rate will be more for the unsecured loans. Credit card loans, bank over drafts, personal loans, and credit facilities are the examples of unsecured loans. If the borrower does not pay it would be difficult for the lenders to collect the amounts from the borrowers.

Demand loans on the other hand are short term loans. There may not be any fixed time of repayment. The demand loans can be both secured and unsecured. Loans are given to borrowers to make use of the funds and earn more money. The borrowers should grow with the money lent by the banks. The banks also would grow with the interest they earn from the loans. Both the borrower and the lender are benefited by loans, however those who struggle to make repayments may need to seek some form of debt consolidation and debt management advice.

7 Benefits Of Building Niche Blogs_75840

In this article, I will describe 7 benefits of building niche blogs.

A "niche" refers to a targeted market with profit potential that is not saturated with competitors. The whole idea is to realize the benefits of building niche blogs and then find the niche markets out there and start building.

Benefit #1

Niche Blogs are essentially niche websites that are alive!

That's because your blog will grow as you continue to publish posts or pages regularly to your blog. In contrast, many niche websites are seldom modified or updated after they are created.

Benefit #2

Blogs are designed to publish and update contents easily once you have them set up, configured and running.

Once you get the hang of it, it's a matter of getting into that habit of writing blog posts and pages and publishing them regularly.

Benefit #3

They are either FREE or cost very little to set up.

You can create your blogs easily by visiting blogger.com or wordpress.org and taking time to study and learn the "how-to".

Benefit #4

You can make money with your niche blogs in many ways, such as:

- Publishing third-party ads in your blogs (eg. Google Adsense pubishing)

- Recommending affiliate products and services in your blogs (eg. Amazon)

Benefit #5

Unlike websites, blogs are interactive. Visitors, or blog readers, are usually allowed to post comments for a blog post (or article) to the blog owner.

This 'dialog' helps to build rapport and relationship between the blog owner and his visitors or members.

Benefit #6

Since blogs are usually updated regularly via blog posts and pages, blogs will rank higher in search engines as compared to websites. In contrast, you have to do a lot of tweaking to a niche website through Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques.

Search engines will visit your blogs more regularly as you blog more regularly.

Thus, you can also place links of your other websites to get them indexed quickly by the search engines.

Benefit #7

A blog's syndication function is its most powerful benefit!

You can syndicate the contents of your blog by allowing other website publishers to publish your feed (or channel) on their sites. This helps to bring more traffic to your blogs as the visitors of these sites subscribe to your feed via web-based or desktop newsreaders.

So, with the above benefits, doesn't it make a lot of sense to start building niche blogs as quickly as possible?

6 Phase Web Development Process Followed By A Web Development Company_61081

When things are difficult to handle and a lot complicated then there is only one way which can help you handle it and that is following a process to accomplish a task on hand. Web application development if not handled efficaciously from the beginning can lead to havoc in the application which can ultimately cause client dissatisfaction and bring a bad name to the web development company. Hence it is very important that every web development company follows a 6 phase web development process to be successful in the industry.

1st Phase is related to Need Assessment: Web application development begins with need assessment the most important part of the process. If the needs are not defined clearly then how will the web development company create an application which perfectly matches client requirements, without need assessment it is simply impossible to develop an application as required by the clients.

Hence it is important that the web designer gathers information related to the purpose of the application to be developed, what is to be accomplished, for whom the application should be developed and what type of content should be written. This can be done by asking relevant questions to the clients.

2nd Phase is related to Planning of the Application: The second phase is all about using the information gathered from the first page to draw a plan highlighting the process of application development. A more known word for plan would be sitemap ?it works as a guide for the developers as well as the users. Developers know how to go about the web application development and users can know which page to refer to find the information required.

3rd Phase is related to Design of the Application: Besides the look and feel of the website a web development company has to consider other factors in this phase of web development. It is crucial to consider the target audience when designing the website because it is after all your customers who are going to use the application. It includes things like logo design, site navigation, page design and other elements.

4th Phase is related to Development of the Application: This is the actual phase where the web application development begins, so all those who thought you can directly start development please know that three phases are involved before you can actually start coding. Designers and developers of the web development company work together to create the application as required by the stakeholders.

5th Phase is related to Testing and Delivery of the Application: How will you feel if you receive a product which does not function as you wished? Of course you would have felt it would have been better if the company had tested the product before delivering it to you. Just like you, stakeholders also want fully functional applications and hence this phase of web application development is very important for a web development company.

6th Phase is related to Maintenance of the Application: Like any other thing your application also requires maintenance. This can refer to two different things one maintaining the website as you would maintain any of your precious possessions and second maintaining the website to mean updating it from time to time.

5 Features Of Good Web Development_61108

In this day and time, who doesn抰 have a website? Almost all companies have one, and those that don抰 are depriving themselves of the international visibility of their brand and the millions of people out there that are potential customers.

However, the success of a website抯 ability to express, inform and translate visitors into customers relies on 5 features. These are the golden rules of good web development.

1. Readability. Written content is one of the most important ways in which your message is expressed to your visitor (pictures and the overall 揻eel?are the others). Your content should be concise, understandable and effective to your target market. While it would be nice if this could be tailored for anybody to read, that would be a difficult task. What you really want is just to be able to get your point across quickly to your visitor.

2. Simplicity. Simple websites are easier to navigate and don抰 frustrate the visitor. Complexity is only appreciated by few people, and chances are, they won抰 be the ones wanting to inquire about your services.

3. Focus. Each page should have one main focus. This main focus is what should stand out and be incredibly easy to pinpoint by your visitor. That means the page should be devoid of unnecessary fluff, filler and so forth.

4. Tailored to Your Target Market. This is similar to readability, but refers to the overall look and feel of your website. For example, you抣l notice that fashion designer sites tend to have lots of images and little text. Because they are in a visual-based industry, this makes sense.

5. Website should load quickly. While technology has advanced our daily lives in many ways, what it has made worse is our patience level. Internet users are incredibly impatient. Just a few seconds of waiting for a page to load or a function to start working could be too long for a visitor, who will leave your site and perhaps check out a competitor抯. You need to retain their attention as long as possible, and one of the best ways to do this is to make your website respond quickly to your visitor抯 request. Do this by limiting picture sizes, minimizing or eliminating flash (which is often a prime suspect in slow-moving sites), and making the site work flawlessly across all browsers. You抣l also want a good server that will be able to accommodate your expected, and unexpected, visitors.

'If I Die' app updates Facebook for you when you pass

In your final moments, updating your Facebook status or sending a Tweet should be the last thing on your mind. A morbid new service promises to take care of that for you so you can focus on the more important things when -- heaven forbid -- death catches up.

The free Facebook app If I Die gives people a chance to write their messages or record their videos well before the end arrives. Upon death, three “trustees” -- friends that you assign -- must verify your death, at which point your updates will be released to the public.

Messages can be released either all at once or on a predetermined schedule -- meaning your words can go on, and on, and on ... online that is.

But if you're thinking of changing your will "from beyond the grave," think again, said Steven M. Fox, a member of the Tax and Estate Planning practice group at law firm Buchalter Nemer. If I Die messages may hold meaning but they won't hold legal water.

“They would have no legal bearing,” Nemer told FoxNews.com. “So if anyone contests the trusteeship appointment the deceased made on his or her Facebook page, that appointment will not hold water.”

The problem, Nemer said, is in accountability. If I Die messages have more holes than a ghost mask, from a legal perspective.

“It's too easily forged and cannot be proven to be the intent of the deceased, so [If I Die messages are] not valid,” he said.

The Israeli startup that developed the app, Willook (which specializes in “time capsule” services) suggests instead leaving behind a final farewell, a long-held secret, or even one final insult.

Morbid, certainly -- but also potentially useful.

"We all have things to say and don't necessarily have the audience with the patience to hear us," co-founder and CEO Eran Alfonta told Mashable.com. "Actually, we all want to leave something behind, we all want to leave a stamp behind us."

Alfonta got the idea after a near fatal car crash with family and friends while traveling in Italy. After the incident, Alfonta’s friends implored him to create a service "where they could record something secret to their kids that would only be sent if they died," Mashable reported.

The app can also bring peace of mind to those with terminal illnesses and are looking to get their things in order in the era of Facebook.

Private Xombie rocket aces NASA landing test

A private suborbital rocket passed a landing test for NASA with flying colors this month in a succesful trial run of technology that could help future spacecraft touch down on other planets or moons.

On Feb. 2, Masten Space Systems' Xombie rocket rose 164 feet (50 meters) off a launch pad in the California desert, moved sideways the same distance, and then landed softly on another pad. The entire flight lasted just 67 seconds.

The brief test flight demonstrated a new control system called the Guidance Embedded Navigator Integration Environment (GENIE), which was developed by the nonprofit Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, Mass. NASA's Flight Opportunities Program sponsored the recent flight, in the hopes that GENIE will enable more ambitious landing demonstrations in the future.

"The Draper and Masten team has done a tremendous job pulling together this flight demonstration in a short amount of time," said John Kelly, Flight Opportunities Program manager at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center in Edwards, Calif. "Draper was awarded this task in September 2011. This capability will allow the program to quickly demonstrate landing technologies for future space missions."

After being tapped by the Flight Opportunities Program for the landing task, Draper chose Masten to provide the flight vehicle. Xombie has a record of success; in October 2009, the vehicle won the $150,000 second prize in NASA's Lunar Lander Challenge, which sought to spur the development of private spaceships and their flight software.

Masten is developing a variety of reusable, unmanned vertical-takeoff and –landing vehicles for suborbital spaceflight. The company also hopes to build robotic spaceships for orbital missions eventually.

Last year, the Flight Opportunities Program awarded Masten a a two-year contract to fly research and technology payloads to suborbital space. Six other private spaceflight companies — including Virgin Galactic, Armadillo Aerospace and XCOR Aerospace — also received funding. Altogether, the contracts are worth a total of $10 million.

NASA hopes the Flight Opportunities Program helps enable regular, reliable and low-cost access to near-space, with easy recovery of intact payloads.

Surprising signs your immunity needs a boost

Some people seem to survive cold and flu season with nary a sniffle.

And yet plenty others seem to catch cold after cold; sidelined with a perpetually stuffed-up nose and hacking cough that lasts all winter long. So what's different between these two groups? Research shows your cold and flu vulnerability may come down to a few important—and unexpected—habits, like how much sugar you eat or how dry your nose is.

Assess your risk with these seven signs of impaired immunity, and learn what you can do to stay healthy.

1. You have a sweet tooth.
Eating too much sugar doesn't just pack on pounds …

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating 100 g of sugar (think three cans of soda) significantly hampered the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria for up to 5 hours afterward.

Eat These Immune Boosting Foods Instead

2. You don't drink enough water.
There's a reason moms and doctors always push fluids on you when you're sick.

Your body needs plenty of water to flush out toxins—and yes, coffee and tea are acceptable sources. How much fluid you should drink daily varies from person to person. You're drinking the right amount if your urine is pale yellow.

3. You've got a lot of weight to lose.
You know excess weight is unhealthy for your heart, brain and other organs. But it's also bad for your immune system.

In fact, those who become most seriously ill with swine flu tend to share the same characteristic: a body mass index over 40, meaning they are morbidly obese. Excess weight can cause hormonal imbalances and inflammation that impairs the immune system's ability to fight infection.

4. You drink water from a well.
Surprisingly, the cleanliness of your drinking water can play a role in whether or not you get sick.

As many as 25 million Americans drink well water that contains more than the safe levels of arsenic determined by the EPA. Arsenic has been linked to several different cancers, and affects the immune response to swine flu as well. When researchers from Dartmouth Medical School inoculated two groups of mice with the H1N1 virus, the group that had spent 5 weeks drinking arsenic-tainted water developed suppressed immune systems, and many died. The mice that didn't drink the water got the flu but recovered completely.

If your well water tests high, consider switching to bottled water or investing in a remediation system that will remove the arsenic.

5. Your nose is Sahara desert-dry.
As uncomfortable as it may be, a runny nose is actually a good defense against colds and the flu.

Sounds gross, but mucus traps viruses and clears them from the body. If your nasal passages are too dry, germ invaders have an easier time. If the dryness is a temporary problem, irrigate your nasal passages with a squeeze bottle or neti pot of saline solution. A humidifier can also help. If dryness is chronic, see your doctor to determine the underlying cause.

6. You're always seriously stressed out.
It's no coincidence that you tend to catch a cold after a big work deadline.
According to a report by the American Psychological Association, long-term stress weakens the responses of your immune system. In addition, "if you become stressed while you have the flu, your symptoms can get worse," says Philip Tierno, director of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University and author of The Secret Life of Germs: What They Are, Why We Need Them, and How We Can Protect Ourselves Against Them.

8 Ways to Lower Stress Levels, Now

7. You're always nursing a cold.
This means your immune system isn't operating at top speed.
The average adult picks up one to three colds each season that typically last 3 or 4 days. If you get more, your resistance might be low. Getting more sleep, regular exercise and rounding out your diet to get lots of healthy veggies and these foods can help.

Some electric toothbrushes causing health problems, FDA says

Your dentist may recommend you use an electric toothbrush, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers of some potential hazards.

Some people who used the battery-powered Arm & Hammer Spinbrush experienced parts of the toothbrush popping off and chipping teeth, flying into their eyes or becoming lodged in their throat.

“It’s important that consumers know how to avoid the risks associated with using the Spinbrush,” said Shumaya Ali, a consumer safety officer at the FDA. “We’ve had reports in which parts of the toothbrush broke off during use and were released into the mouth with great speed, causing broken teeth and presenting a choking hazard.”

The FDA does regulate manual and electric toothbrushes.

Susan Runner, a dentist who is chief of the FDA’s dental services branch, said although these devices can be helpful in removing plaque and preventing decay, they can be hazardous – and if children are using them, they should always be supervised.

The FDA is alerting the public about the potential for injury while using the following models of Spinbrush:
• Spinbrush ProClean
• Spinbrush ProClean Recharge
• Spinbrush Pro Whitening
• Spinbrush SONIC
• Spinbrush SONIC Recharge
• Spinbrush Swirl
• Spinbrush Classic Clean
• Spinbrush For Kids
• Spinbrush Replacement Heads

The children’s models -  “Spinbrush for Kids” have a different design, and the heads are not removable. However, some problems with the children’s electric toothbrush have still been reported, including cut lips, battery burns and bristles that fell off and lodged in the child’s tonsils.

The FDA warned Church & Dwight Co. Inc., which manufactures the toothbrush, of violations in May 2011, and the company has done the following:

• Added bristles that change colors when it’s time to change the head
• Issued a safety notice about Spinbrush in TV and print ads
• Improved labeling to caution consumers that they should change the toothbrush’s head every three months – or sooner, especially if the head is loose

The company's website, http://www.spinbrush.com/, also offers a reminder to change the head of an electric toothbrush every three months, or sooner if parts become damaged.

"Extended usage, loose parts or excessive wear could lead to brush head breakage, generation of small parts and possible choking hazard," according to the website. "Inspect brush for loose parts before use."

U.S. won't allow more fungicide in orange juice, FDA says

The U.S. health regulator on Thursday declined a request by orange juice producers to allow a higher tolerance of a banned fungicide in juice imports, a decision that will force Brazil to stop exporting concentrated orange juice to the United States.

Brazil, the world's top orange juice producer, will still be able to ship its U.S. customers orange juice that is not from concentrate, since that variety contains much smaller levels of carbendazim.

Brazil asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to give it until June 2013 to eradicate carbendazim from its juice after the regulator began checking all imports in January for the chemical which it banned in 2009.

Carbendazim is illegal on citrus in the United States, but commonly used in Brazil, the world's top orange juice exporter, to combat mold on orange trees. It is permitted up to a limit in imports to the European Union, the main buyer of Brazil's juice.

The checks began after Coca Cola alerted the FDA when it discovered the chemical in laboratory tests.

Orange juice futures have been on a rollercoaster ride since the FDA began testing orange juice imports amid uncertainty over whether the United States would cut off supplies from Brazil, which provides about a tenth of U.S. orange juice.

The futures, traded at New York's ICE exchange, hit an all-time high

The futures, traded at New York's ICE exchange, hit an all-time high on January 23 of $2.244 a lb but the benchmark March contract had retreated to $1.8505 per lb by Thursday.

Brazil's juice industry has continued exports to the United States since, but only in diluted not-from-concentrate form which meets FDA requirements for carbendazim content below 10 parts per billion (ppb), a virtually undetectable quantity.

"By the end of the year it is probable that things will be back to normal and we will be shipping concentrated juice to (the U.S.) again," an orange juice industry source told Reuters, declining to be named as he was not authorized to speak on the industry's behalf.

Brazil had requested the FDA distinguish between frozen concentrate and not-from-concentrate, meaning a 60 ppb carbendazim tolerance for the former since not-from-concentrate is diluted to about six times the volume of concentrate.

The FDA refused, saying its policy is to apply the 10 ppb limit on juice regardless of its concentration.

U.S. juice industry to buy elsewhere

The Juice Products Association of U.S.-based juice producers said in a statement it was "disappointed" by the FDA decision, since the Environmental Protection Agency declared carbendazim levels of up to 80 ppb posed no threat to human health.

It said it would have to seek supplies of juice from other producing countries.

"The United States cannot grow enough oranges to satisfy American consumer demand for orange juice and therefore juice processors must rely on orange juice concentrate from other countries to assure adequate supplies," it said.

The association had backed Brazil's call for imports of concentrate to be tested in the diluted form in which it is consumed.

In a 1,600 word statement, the FDA said it could not accept the requests Brazil's juice industry presented to it in writing on January 19, citing laws that it said prohibited it from making exceptions that would accommodate it.

"We recognize that the use in Brazil of a pesticide not authorized in the U.S. and FDA's detention of shipments bearing illegal residues has affected the orange juice market and has economic impacts," the response read.

"However these impacts do not warrant a change in FDA's enforcement ...," it concluded, adding that making an exception would create an unfair advantage over other food producers who have incurred costs to ensure their products meet FDA standards.

The FDA statement can be viewed at: here

About two-thirds of Brazil's juice shipments to the United States are already in not-from-concentrate, ready-to-drink form.

The Brazilian industry source said exporters would have to review supply contracts for concentrated juice with U.S.-based importers to switch to a not-from-concentrate product which is more expensive and bulkier to ship.

The European Union, where more than two thirds of Brazil's orange juice is shipped, applies a carbendazim tolerance of 200 ppb.
